“I can’t find Foxie, I can’t find Foxie!!” my six year old lamented as he jumped on my head at 6am last Sunday morning. ‘Foxie’ is a little lantern that we bought on a 3 for 2 from the M&S Christmas Shop last year. A simple, £2 pocket-money treat that has become central to one little boy’s Christmas preparations and will, I think, continue to do so for years to come…
Foxie standing guard over Santa’s treats
Zach is an out-going, busy-little-bee and like all kids – he adores Christmas. Last year on Christmas Eve, as he and his brother Spike were putting up their mini-tree in their bedroom, they hatched a plan to make it a ‘special year for Santa’. Knowing they like to do things their way, I left them to it. Two hours later I went upstairs to find hand-made signs written in gold and silver pen, guiding Santa from the chimney and enticing him to eat mince pies and swig sherry. Sitting alongside the plate of goodies, they’d placed Foxie. I asked them why Foxie was there and they said ‘he keeps watch and he’ll light Santa’s way in the dark.’
As Zach shook me awake, those memories of Christmas Eve 2013 came flooding back in full colour – and I realised that Foxie wasn’t just for Christmas – my son seems to really love him and has given him a name, a character and a life all of his own.
So, I got up and went to look for Foxie with Zach – we found him behind Zach’s bed, a little dusty but his battery still works, his dim glow lighting up a little boy’s face with a big, beaming smile. Foxie is now back where he belongs – sitting on Zach’s bedside table, amongst his assortment of ‘precious things’ (football cards, bouncy balls, snotty tissues) and very happy he looks too.
So yea, i’ve been working on some songs over the past year or so. I’m going to start putting them up on Soundcloud. There’s a futuristic theme of a dying Earth in the year 3059, and an Native American warrior named Lozen sent from outerspace to save us. All very straight forward.
This was the first track i did, ‘Stainless’, just a little taster. More to follow soooooon.
